The Apache Fire Makers By Howard Terpning

By Howard Terpning

The Apache Fire Makers by Howard Terpning.

"This is simply an image of two Indians lighting a fire. Actually, I saw the setting ten years ago in the mountains north of Tucson. I was struck by the way the early morning light came down into this little clearing and across the rocks. I tucked it away in the back of my mind until I got the idea for building this fire.

"I wanted to create a nice, intimate mood and a subtle setting. I thought by having this light traveling from right to left across the painting to the figures, then having the sunlight going up the figure and finally having the smoke continue off to the left out of the picture, it would create an interesting pattern of light and shadow. It was late in the year and the light on the grass created a very interesting, warm sort of color."
