Robins At The Nest By Robert Bateman

By Robert Bateman

Robins at the Nest by Robert Bateman

"The American robin is one of the most widespread birds in North America. I have seen them in the South and at the Arctic tree line, but most people think of them as “right around home” birds. In fact, they have adapted so well to human settlement that they are probably more abundant around towns, villages and farms than they are in the wilderness. They will actually build their nests on the dwellings of human beings. The nest is made of mud and grasses in an almost perfect bowl shape."

"Here I have shown a female at the nest. She is probably just poked a worm down the throat of one of the young, and they are hoping for more. They instinctively reach up and beg from any moving object above them, including a human hand. Their mouths are brightly colored to attract the mother's attention."

"The interesting artistic problem in this painting was to have the nest in the shade, as they usually are, but lit from below with the glow of the sunny day on the floor of the stable." ~ Robert Bateman
