"I am ashamed that probably within my lifetime I will witness the extinction of the most beautiful big cat in the wild. As a child, I never knew about extinction. I thought that everything would be there for ever. Dreams about big wild animals in the jungle were always in my head."

"The knowledge that this striped beauty will probably disappear in the wild within ten years and that I could paint his portrait while he is still there gave me a real thrill. For their survival, tigers need a lot of territory (17 square miles for a male). They mark the boundaries of their territory with sprays, just as your tabby does. They also need an average of 13 pounds of meat per day. They are normally nocturnal hunters, but where there is no disturbance by man, they will be quite active during the day too." ~ Carl Brenders from his new book "Pride of Place" (2007).
