With the 2024 Minnesota pheasant opener past, Al Steinberg is in the spotlight.

Steinberg figures he was probably in high school when he entered his first original painting in a state wildlife stamp competition.

This year, about 45 years and more than 70 submissions later, his acrylic painting of a ring-necked pheasant pair has been selected for the 2025 Minnesota pheasant stamp contest. Getting a wildlife stamp was a longtime goal, and he said something about being 62 and not achieving it did, “put this little flame under my butt.” He started dedicating three to four hours a day to it. The winning artwork will be featured on the 2025 pheasant stamp.
