"As our small fishing boat approached the shoreline, we saw a large pod of sea lions basking on the rocks. I noticed how smooth the rocks were; perhaps this had become a favorite basking area over the centuries. As our boat drew nearer to the sea lions, I was able to make some quick pencil sketches from my vantage point at the stern of the boat, carefully absorbing the scene that I knew would one day become a painting."

"As our boat came close to the rocks - the depth-finder was registering 200 feet at the shoreline - the sea lions became restless and more vocal. Then as if expertly choreographed, they began a slide down the well worn rocks. The cows and calves went first, as if given a signal by one of the bulls, who were the last into the water. In a sudden frenzy all around us, the sea lions splashed into the waters...we were almost engulfed. although I got a good drenching at the back of the boat, I managed to get the sketches I needed." ~ John Seerey-Lester.
