Deer Camp - Hunters By John Seerey - Lester

Deer Camp By John Seerey-Lester.

It's December 1900 on the Mississippi delta. As night approaches, two hunters sit in camp savoring the success of the day and looking forward to the venison supper.

At the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th, tented deer camps such as this were springing up everywhere from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Mississippi, for purposes of recreation and sport. Although there were still some who hunted to put food on the table, the new trend was to cater for the gentlemen outdoors men. Wealthy sportsmen from England and Europe were also known to travel, at great expense, to share the magic of “Deer Camp”. It was considered a most democratic affair; where men from all walks of life could come together to share the almost spiritual camaraderie experienced at these annual gatherings.

Through popularity the permanent old wooden shack deer camps were extended and auxiliary tented cities with belching stovepipes were a common sight, with whitetail deer hanging.
